Ramadan is the holy month of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims worldwide. The last 10 days of Ramadan hold a special significance as they are believed to be the most blessed days of the month. Muslims are encouraged to increase their worship and engage in voluntary acts of worship during these days. In this blog post, we will explore the seven things the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did during the last 10 days of Ramadan and their significance.

Increase in Worship

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of increasing worship during the last 10 days of Ramadan. This includes performing Taraweeh prayers, reciting Quran, and making dua. The Prophet would spend his nights in prayer and his days in remembrance of Allah. Muslims are encouraged to follow the Prophet's example and increase their worship during these days to seek the blessings and rewards of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever stays up during Laylatul-Qadr (the Night of Decree) out of faith and in the hope of earning reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven" (Sahih Bukhari 1901). Laylatul-Qadr is believed to occur during the last 10 days of Ramadan and is considered the most blessed night of the year. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized voluntary acts of worship during the last 10 days of Ramadan. This includes performing additional prayers, reciting Quran, and engaging in charitable acts. These acts are voluntary but are highly encouraged as they provide an opportunity to gain extra rewards from Allah. The Prophet would engage in these acts of worship himself, and Muslims are encouraged to follow his example. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever performs voluntary deeds during Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of earning reward, his sins will be forgiven" (Sahih Bukhari 2014).

I'tikaf

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would practice I'tikaf during the last 10 days of Ramadan, which entails seclusion in the mosque for the purpose of worship and reflection. This act provides an opportunity for spiritual development and connection with Allah. Muslims who are able to should follow the Prophet's example and engage in I'tikaf during the last 10 days of Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "He who observes the ten days Itikaf during Ramadan will obtain the reward of two Hajj and two Umrah" (Sunan Abu Dawud 2468).

Seeking Forgiveness and Mercy

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would seek forgiveness and mercy during the last 10 days of Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to follow the Prophet's example and seek forgiveness and mercy from Allah during these days. This can be done through dua and repentance, which are highly rewarded during this time. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The one who fasts Ramadan with faith and expectation of reward will have his previous sins forgiven, and the one who stands (in prayer) during Laylatul-Qadr with faith and expectation of reward will have his previous sins forgiven" (Sahih Bukhari 2014).

Generosity and Charity

The Prophet emphasized the importance of generosity and charity during the last 10 days of Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to engage in charitable acts during these days, such as giving to the poor, feeding the hungry, and supporting charitable causes. These acts of kindness are highly rewarded during this time and help to foster a sense of community and brotherhood among Muslims. The Prophet himself was known for his generosity and charity throughout the year, but especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan. He would give generously to the poor and needy, and encouraged his companions to do the same. The act of giving charity is considered one of the most virtuous deeds in Islam, and the rewards for doing so are immense. Muslims are encouraged to give to charity throughout the year, but especially during Ramadan. Many mosques and charitable organizations organize campaigns and events to help those in need during this time. Muslims are encouraged to give generously to these causes, as well as to their own families and communities.

Reflection and Self-Improvement

Muslims are encouraged to reflect on their lives, seek self-improvement, and work towards becoming better Muslims. This can be done through introspection, making dua, and seeking knowledge. Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and growth, and the last 10 days are a particularly important time for Muslims to focus on self-improvement. Muslims are encouraged to take stock of their lives and assess areas in which they can improve. This can involve making changes to their habits, seeking forgiveness for past wrongs, and striving to be better Muslims overall. In addition to introspection and self-assessment, Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge during Ramadan. This can involve reading and studying the Quran, attending lectures and classes at the mosque, and engaging in discussions with other Muslims. The pursuit of knowledge is highly valued in Islam, and the rewards for seeking knowledge during Ramadan are immense.

Increase acts of kindness

the last 10 days of Ramadan are a time for Muslims to increase acts of kindness and compassion towards others. By following the examples set by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Muslims can engage in acts of charity, volunteerism, forgiveness, and prayer to spread kindness and alleviate suffering. May Allah bless us all and grant us the ability to practice kindness and compassion towards others not only during Ramadan but throughout the year.

Examples of Acts of Kindness During the Last 10 Days of Ramadan

  1. Giving Charity: Muslims are encouraged to give to the poor and needy during Ramadan, but it is even more important to do so during the last 10 days. Muslims can give zakat or sadaqah to those in need, donate to a charitable cause, or provide iftar meals to those who are fasting.

  2. Helping the Elderly: Many elderly people may not have family nearby or may have limited mobility, making it difficult for them to perform daily tasks. Muslims can offer to assist them with grocery shopping, cleaning, or running errands.

  3. Feeding the Hungry: In addition to providing iftar meals, Muslims can also volunteer at local soup kitchens or food banks to help those who are struggling to put food on the table.

  4. Visiting the Sick: Visiting the sick is considered a great act of kindness in Islam. Muslims can visit hospitals or care homes to bring some cheer to those who are unwell.

  5. Planting Trees: Planting trees is a sustainable act of kindness that benefits the environment and future generations.

  6. Volunteering at an Animal Shelter: Muslims are encouraged to show kindness and mercy to all of Allah's creation, including animals. Volunteering at an animal shelter or feeding stray animals are great examples of acts of kindness.

  7. Donating to Education: Education is a key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Muslims can donate to schools or scholarship funds to help underprivileged children get an education.

8. Spreading Kindness on Social Media: Muslims can use social media platforms to spread positivity and kindness by sharing inspirational quotes, uplifting stories, or words of encouragement.

9. Praying for Others: Muslims can pray for the well-being of others, including friends, family, and strangers.

The last 10 days of Ramadan hold a special significance for Muslims worldwide. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) set an example for Muslims to follow during these days by increasing worship, engaging in voluntary acts of worship, practicing I'tikaf, seeking forgiveness and mercy, practicing generosity and charity, and reflecting on oneself. Muslims are encouraged to follow the Prophet's example during these days to seek the blessings and rewards of Allah.

May Allah accept our efforts and grant us the ability to follow the Prophet's example during the last 10 days of Ramadan. May this holy month be a time of spiritual growth, reflection, and renewal for all Muslims around the world. Ameen.
